Choosing materials for any outdoor project is a vital part of the process. Material choice affects durability, aesthetic, functionality and budget. Over the course of many years of designing and building outdoor living spaces, I’ve developed an acute awareness of how to choose the right materials for the job. Here, I share a bit about what I’ve learned along the way:

Natural Stone

If you’re looking for timeless beauty and some of the most durable materials, then natural stone can be a great choice. The unique textures and colors that come with this material choice can provide a luxurious finish. Use natural stone on patios, walkways and retaining walls.

Concrete Pavers

For a more versatile choice in material, you can go with concrete pavers. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors so it can be used for a variety of applications. This material is also easy to install and cost-effective. Concrete pavers are a good choice for driveways, patios and paths.

Brick

For a classic look that provides warmth to the space, choose brick. This material is low maintenance and has some natural color variations that may add character to your space. Choose brick for pathways, patios and garden edging.

Wood

For another option that’s versatile and warm, choose wood. Wood is a great choice for enhancing the aesthetics of your space, but it comes with an important challenge: maintenance. Most wood materials will require regular maintenance to prevent rot and weathering. Treated and composite wood will provide enhanced durability. Choose wood for decks, pergolas and fences.

Gravel and Granite

Gravel and decomposed granite are cost-effective choices and provide the luxury of low-maintenance. These materials will offer your space excellent rain drainage, and may provide a rustic look. Use gravel and granite for pathways, driveways and informal garden areas.

Material selection for your hardscape is an important part of any outdoor design project, and depends on your goals, budget and maintenance abilities. Natural stone, concrete pavers, brick, wood and gravel each offer unique benefits that enhance your outdoor space in different ways.
