The Golden State of California is widely known for its incredible biodiversity, from the tiniest of flowers to the towering Redwoods. While we certainly don’t recommend attempting to grow a massive Redwood in your backyard, there are a variety of flowering trees that grow beautifully in Southern California.
Southern California Flowering Trees
Evergreen Pear
The Evergreen Pear is one of the most popular Southern California flowering trees due to its versatile functions, stunning autumn foliage, and gorgeous white blossoms. The Evergreen Pear blooms earlier than most flowering trees in this region, usually from January to March. Most likely, you have seen this tree often in parks and along streets as it is hearty and easy to manage. If you are looking for a tree that grows to about 20-30 feet in height, the Evergreen Pear is an excellent choice.
Jacaranda
Jacaranda literally means “fragrant,” coming as no surprise to those who have smelled its purplish-blue panicles that cover the canopy of the tree in late spring. Jacarandas need plenty of space as they can grow up to 30-45 feet in height. Additionally, these trees can be quite messy, so it’s essential to place them in a location where their multi-seasonal blooms won’t cause damage.
Golden Rain Tree
The Golden Rain trees, while native to Asia, have become widely popular in Southern California due its drought and smog-resistant nature. Growing to a height and width of 30-40 feet, this tree is a statement piece ideal for large spaces in need of shade. It gets its golden name from its yellow blooms, often blooming later in summer.
Crape Myrtle
Crape Myrtles come in a variety of options, from small shrubs to 15–25 foot trees. Whichever shape you choose, most Crape Myrtles offer several weeks of blooms in summer. The petals generally come in white, purple, pink, or red, and when the tree is not in bloom, it still has an enticing look.
Western Redbud
Flowering in the spring and growing to a height of 15 to 20 feet, the Western Redbud is native to the southwestern United States. It is particularly popular among those who have minimal space but still want to grow a tree as it thrives in compact habitats, is drought-resistant, and can grow in full sun and partial shade. Come spring, you will get adorable magenta buds that grow in clusters.
