Lawns can be a tricky business. They aren’t always big, but they can require quite a bit of maintenance and planning due to the area’s constant sun, high temperatures, and droughts. Most of us would rather spend time enjoying our outdoor spaces than struggling with the constant upkeep. Here are some lawn summer maintenance tips to reduce your time spent working outside maintaining your space.
1. You Must Fertilize!
Fertilization is a key component of keeping your lawn healthy, not patchy, and green. There is no doubt that Culver City lawns are best fertilized in the fall or early spring; however, this window isn’t an exact science. You can still fertilize in May or June with most types of grass (be careful, though, some do burn!). When temperatures are over eighty degrees, fertilize away!
2. Avoid Excessive Foot Traffic
We can all envision the cries of angry adults yelling at kids to “get off my lawn!” and laugh back to our childhoods. However, in the end, these adults had it right! Excessive walking and especially driving on your lawn can compact the soil. Compacted soil makes it challenging for the grass’s roots to permeate. If you have just watered the lawn or it has recently rained, beware! That is the time that your yard is the easiest to damage.
3. Water Mindfully
Living in Culver City, there is no denying the droughts that have plagued the region for decades. However, in the dry LA summers, most grass still needs around an inch of water each week. Adding an irrigation or sprinkler system can save your lawn’s life! Watering before 9 a.m., or even earlier, twice a week is ideal.
4. Reseeding
Do not be afraid to reseed! Although seeding usually happens in the springtime, summer can still be a worthwhile time to reseed. Especially if your lawn is plagued by pests or patchy grass, reseeding in the summer can be necessary. It is an inexpensive yet worthwhile endeavor to keep your grass looking whole and healthy.
