Backyard Remodel featuring Modern Pool and Spa Deck in South Bay CA

The drought-prone climate of southern california puts a challenge on landscape design in the area, because of the need for water. After years of honing my expertise on landscape design in this region, I’ve come up with a few tips on how to create beautiful low-water landscapes that thrive with minimal water use.

Species Selection

Southern California has been drought-prone for many years, so the native plant species have adapted to this climate. Choosing native foliage is a great place to start when designing the landscaping because they require less water to thrive. Some options are succulents, lavender, California poppies, manzanita, ceanothus, and California fuchsia.

Smart Irrigation

Drip irrigation or smart sprinklers help minimize water waste. These systems take a more direct approach to watering the plant roots directly. These systems also help reduce evaporation and runoff. Incorporate timers and moisture sensors to keep the system running efficiently.

Mulch Choice

Applying a thick layer of mulch around the landscaping helps to retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation. Mulch also helps keep the weeds away, a vital part of protecting the landscaping. Organic mulches like wood chips or bark will decompose over time and add beneficial nutrients to the soil around the plants. Inorganic mulches like gravel or stones provide long-lasting coverage. Both types of these mulches can significantly reduce the need to water too frequently.

Grouping Plants by Watering Needs

You have the luxury of strategically placing plant species with similar needs next to each other. Planting this way will help you water more efficiently and avoid over or under watering certain plant species. I call these hydrozones, or areas that receive tailored irrigation.

In Southern California, creating a landscape that’s water-efficient is an absolute need. Choosing the right plants, using efficient irrigation and incorporating sustainable practices will help you achieve that. Designing the landscaping this way will promote an environmentally-friendly outdoor space that thrives in any given month, for years to come.
